I just returned from a business trip to Sacramento, and one evening I called home to hear Mike's unfortunate news.
A check that we had written to a nonprofit organization called African Smile (which provides drinking-water filters for African families) had been stolen out of an employee's car. Now, of course the first question that comes to mind is why anyone would leave checks in one's car. But I realize that people do this kind of thing all the time.
When Mike called our credit union to stop the check, he was told that the protocol was to cancel the account. And the correctness of this procedure was confirmed by his internet search, which yielded a bunch of stories of people whose checking accounts were drained by people who got ahold of their checking account numbers.
During the past week, we have been contacting everyone to whom we have written checks recently...plus all the companies with which we have automatic withdrawal (utilities, mortgage, etc.) and automatic payroll, etc. We also very recently ordered new checks, so obviously they will have to reordered. It's all a royal pain, but at least we are only out $25 or so. It could have been so much worse.
