Let Constance take her girlfriend to the prom!

Constance is a high school student in Mississippi who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom. She asked her school whether this would be okay, and in response the school board decided to cancel the prom, citing "distractions." They also encouraged students to hold their own proms (where, presumably, they could ban gay/lesbian students).

I just joined a Facebook group called "Let Constance Take Her Girlfriend to the Prom." The page is full of great photos of gay/lesbian couples attending their own high school proms (some of them even way back in the '80s!!), intermixed with wonderful photos of famous actresses wearing tuxes. It has 45,000 fans so far.

Here is Constance and her ACLU lawyer on the Early Show:

If you think this is unfair and want to voice your opinion, you can write the school superintendent, Teresa McNeece, at mcneece@itawamba.k12.ms.us. This web site lists the e-mail addresses of the school board members. I've sent off my e-mails in support of Constance and her girlfriend. It only takes a minute or two.
