Homophobic Mormons

Utah state rep. LaVar Christensen filed a bill yesterday that would enforce Utah's one-man, one-woman policy but further require that publicly funded programs, laws, and regulations be “carefully scrutinized to ensure that they promote the family.”

Taking a page right out of the Latter Day Saints (LDS) manual about families, the bill states that a married father and mother and their children are the “fundamental unit of society.” It goes on to say that “marriage and family predate all governments and are supported by and consistent with the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God, the Creator and Supreme Judge of the World, affirmed in the nation’s founding Declaration of Independence.”

In conjunction with this pending bill, he has filed another one that states "An arrangement, agreement or transaction that is unlawful or violates public policy is void and unenforceable.” You can read the bills here.

GLBT and human rights activists are concerned that these two bills, together, could be used to say that same-sex relationships are against public policy and thereby prevent GLBT families from receiving public services or having their rights protected (such as parental or legal).
I wonder why he didn't go a step further and just declare GLBT families immoral or evil. Clearly, that's not very far beneath the surface of these actions.
