Oregon senator Jeff Merkley introduces bill to protect GLBT rights in the workplace

Jeff Merkley (D-OR) is introducing the legislation with Tom Harkin (D-IA) and republicans Mark Kirk (IL) and Susan Collins (ME) to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Given the Tea Party climate in Washington recently, it seems unlikely that it will pass. But it's a start. Just think of how long William Wilberforce and his colleagues had to fight to abolish slavery in the United Kingdom.

My parents (and many of their friends) worked steadfastly to elect Jeff Merkley (he beat incumbent senator Gordon Smith in 2008). He makes me proud to be an Oregonian!

And he's a good Lutheran boy! He attends Reconciling in Christ member congregation, Central Lutheran.
